"GO ON, mum, ” urged my three sons. “A little sip won’t hurt.” I peered warily into the murky-looking natural pool called the Baths of Aphrodite in north-west Cyprus.

Legend has it that the Goddess of Love went there to bathe and meet her lover Adonis and if you drink the water you’ll stay forever beautiful but I didn’t chance it.

We were en route to the little port of Latchi, once the place where sponge-divers went to harvest their popular catch.

These days it’s more about exciting watersports and my thrill-seeking sons were in heaven when they were towed through the surf on an oversized rubber ring.

We set a course for the Blue Lagoon where we spent a morning diving from our “pirate ship” and snorkelling through shoals of cardinal fish.

After all our activities, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch at Fish Tavern Latchi, one of the numerous restaurants lining the quayside. “I’m going to look at the boats, ” said seven-year-old Freddie. “I’ll have calamari and some pitta bread, ” he said.

My husband Neil, the boys and I were staying in Paphos at the five-star Almyra hotel, the stylish little sister of the lavish Anassa, popular with stars such as Sir Paul McCartney and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

I loved our inter-connecting suites with their contemporary interior and whitewashed roof terrace furnished with large white sofas, cushions and lanterns.

“This is the life, ” I think as I settle down with a glass of Cypriot sauvignon to take in the sunset.

For families, Almyra has struck just the right balance with a relaxed, dip in and out-style children’s scheme which is great for all ages.

Activities include football training, digital workshops and mock cocktail making, while teens have their own space to play air hockey, Nintendo Wii or just chill out.

There are disco and pizza nights, too, which gave Neil and I the opportunity to enjoy a meal “à deux” on the water’s edge at the hotel’s Ouzeri restaurant which specialises in delicious meze.
