Travel on Route 77 N

2. Re: Traveling route 77 from west Virginia to North Carolina
-Downtown Mount Airy, NC, the original inspiration for Andy Griffith's Mayberry. A nice walkable downtown area where you can browse the shops, maybe get some ice cream, etc. You can even take a ride in the Sheriff's squad car!
-Old Salem in downtown Winston-Salem, the restored original Moravian settlement with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and employees in period costumes. Tours are available, but it's also a great place just to walk around. Be sure to stop by Winkler's Bakery for some Moravian cookies and other treats!
-the Piedmont Triad Farmer's Market, located just off I-40 between Winston-Salem and Greensboro (near the airport). Saturdays rock, with vendors selling all kinds of produce and other things like handmade soaps, goat cheeses, birdhouses, wood carvings, and lots more. They often have special events like kiddie rides, antique car shows, and festivals celebrating the local farm fare.
