Welcome to Barbados, known among locals as ‘de rock’. With its palm-fringed beaches, turquoise waters and tropical climate, it’s no surprise that Barbados draws in tourists by the bucket load. While we all dream of luxury holidays in paradise, we loathe the idea of these being tainted by fellow travellers seeking the very same experience. Things to Do

Sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the coasts of Barbados offer two contrasting worlds. While the west coast is adorned with plush resorts, sumptuous villas, world-class golf courses, calm waters and white sandy beaches, the east coast offers a whole different story. This is the Atlantic side of the island, comprised of rugged, dramatic coastlines. You’ll witness panoramic views of scenic rural landscapes, acres of green sugar cane fields, colourful chattel houses, and fishing boats bobbing in the little bays. Beaches on the east are wide, empty and untouched, with jagged cliffs jutting out into the sea and curious rock formations forming the coastline. Bathsheba is home to a small community of fishing folk and a number of Bajan seaside cottage owners who visit at the weekends. Head further south and you’ll discover Foul Bay, a tranquil location with a white sandy beach so vast it will never appear crowded. Don’t miss the famous ‘Soup Bowl’, which gets its name from the foamy surf and is considered one of the top surfing spots in the world.

Stepping away from the coast, the less-developed upper central region of Barbados tends to get overlooked by tourists. Yet this is where you’ll discover hidden attractions such as Welchman Hall gully, Gun Hill Signal Station, the Morgan Lewis windmill, and the tranquil Joe’s River Forest. These are best explored by jeep tours offered by Island Safari, or perhaps rent a vehicle and zoom along winding paths, brushing past verdant hills, limestone cliffs and river gullies. Alternatively, discover the landscape by foot with The Barbados National Trust, which runs a weekly series of free hikes to the lesser-known scenic spots of Barbados – these provide great photo opportunities for avid holiday photographers.
