Travel I 75 or I 65
5. Re: Driving through Alabama
Not sure what part of FL you are talking about either, but just made this trip, as I have several times and each time I wonder about the best route.
If your objective is to get to I-75 in FL, ( to go anywhere OTHER than Tallahassee, the panhandle or Pensacola), then going through ATL AND the 231/I-10/Dothan route will add extra miles and traffic anxiety.
We pulled up google, mapquest, bing, AAA and rand mcnally and compared them all, and honestly I still dont know what I will do next time.
But here is what we did and found it shortest as well as relatively traffic free.
South of BHM, take exit 250, I-459 north to exit 19, US 280 East. Take that through Columbus GA, where it changes to 520 east. take 520 to dawson, ga, then US 82 east to I-75 at Tifton GA.
This route has some two lane spots, but only drops to 55 when you approach a town. small towns ( few) and Fort Benning are only "speed traps". you have to pay attention to a lot of turns, but it was easy, and scenic with farms, country stores, etc.
Another option is to take US 82 east from east of Montgomery, through Eufala, AL, and on to Dawson where you pick up directions as above.
We actually went this way last time, and too many wiggly roads and red light towns. seemed to take forever.
The 65/231/10/75 route seems most direct, but 231 through Dothan, as has been stated is a PAIN, AND, all the maps show it longer.
Another thing to consider if you want it to be interesting, if you have time for stops...look through
